Pertussis, commonly known as “whooping cough,” is a highly contagious disease that can cause severe coughing spells. The disease can be especially serious—even fatal—for infants who catch whooping cough from infected adults or older siblings.
Since childhood vaccines that help protect against whooping cough can fade over time, a single dose of Tdap vaccine is recommended for people ages 11 and older who have not previously received Tdap.
