Pertussis, commonly known as “whooping cough,” is a highly contagious disease that can cause severe coughing spells. The disease can be especially serious—even fatal—for infants. Infants can catch whooping cough from infected adults or infected siblings.
Since protection against whooping cough from childhood vaccines can fade over time, a single dose of Tdap vaccine is recommended for people ages 11 years and older who have not previously received Tdap.
